A Communities Directives

Ive been mulling the details and broad outlines of starting a community. First things being first, these are the heart and soul rules I have come up with for a fictional community. All of the other decisions from finance to housing to you name it would reflect these 3 directives. What do you think? How would you modify them? What would you add? What is not worded well or can be clarified?

Primary Directive: All of the efforts of the Community shall have, as their primary or secondary focus, a deliberate benefit to the members of the Community in developing their personal relationship with Christ. The Community should, whenever possible, avoid efforts for the sake of duty, tradition, orthodoxy, habit or perceived need that do not actively promote individual healing, enrichment and/or freedom.

Secondary Directive: In the spirit of the Great Commission and the second highest commandment, the Community shall endeavor, whenever possible, to ensure that our efforts invite into healing and fellowship the larger Christian community, our geographical neighbors and the larger world. This directive is sacrificial in nature, requiring us to sacrifice our own desires in order to be Christ to the world.

Tertiary Directive: In all things the Community will strive for its efforts to be self sustaining/self sufficient. The Community will strive, in all things, to provide for its members a safe, nurturing and freeing environment that is sustainable and resilient in all of its approaches to life, finances, community and individual relationships and resource use.

I need to consider these “directives”.

I find the word directive somewhat formal and harsh sounding. Remember I live in a land where the EU directive supercedes national legislation.
What connotation does the word have in other settings (outside the military)?

  2. aleph says:

    how are other rules framed?

    Consider the Rule of Benedict
    the Rule of Tallaght
    the Rule of the Master

There are lots of rules around – you might want to consider the format of what you are making in the light of history.

DO not be too hasty to make a rule, live it first and then amend in the light of experience. (Pardon my hypocrisy since I have never really followed a rule in my life – Mea Culpa).

    A point of (useless) information

When a group of celts moved out to a new place they took with them the rule of the place from which they came. As they settled there they would often adapt the historical rule and develop it into a new rule. Thus rules did have the ability to change with time and place and community leader.

I’ve been trying to align my thoughts to the general outline of the Constitution, but I need to examine the older Rule’s more closely to see what they hold in the way of ideas. Thanks.
