I almost got back up last night. I wrote this and, thinking I had exorcised my muse, went back to bed. But, another thought struck me as I lay down. Labels like progressive or libertarian or right or left represent significant philosophical differences that we, the masses, hold in regards to the nature of man, right government, etc. But, they are also useful handles by which we can be manipulated.
I don’t really go in for conspiracy theories. In my view, the oligarchs (insert boogeyman of your choice here) hold too disparate interests to do more than create temporary alliances around issues. Look at the history of the Trusts and Tammany Hall and you will see that, for all they did to steer the government to their liking, they spent as much time bickering amongst themselves over what direction that would be. The example of successful organizations are all much smaller and share other common interests, such as the Mafia or the Klan.
That isn’t to say that they aren’t trying. Look at how large corporations distribute their political contributions. They want to insure they have a voice no matter who holds the majority positions.
The problem we have now is to what extent we are all being played by up to date marketing for patsies. Democrat or Republican, progressive or conservative, it seems to matter not at all as to the actual policies enacted. And we have let them get away with this shell game for over 50 years. The real, grass roots Tea Party threw a monkey wrench in that well oiled machine. The spirit that animated the public during those early rallies must be protected and allowed to mature if we are to have any hope to truly reform the system. I give it a 30% chance of success. If we should be able to pull it off, we must make changes to how we educate. For, just as surely as the corporations recovered their position after the breaking of the Trusts, they will seek new positions in whatever comes next…as will those who seek to use the sword of government to reshape society into whatever ideal they believe is best. We must defend the Constitution against both by promoting the single greatest achievement of our Founders…the realization of the sovereignty of the individual in his person and possessions.
