Last week the East Coast suffered a major blow to its electrical infrastructure. Electrical outage can be a minor nuisance, where you simply have to go around and re-set all your digital clocks or it can be life-threatening, such as having no A/C for elderly or infants during a heatwave. There is a ton of great info out there on preparing for energy sustainability around your house. You can do as I plan to do and create the ability to be completely off-grid. This does require some accommodation and expectation management. Or, you can simply plan for being able to run essential equipment for 3-5 days or any plan in between those two scenarios.
The absolute best source I have found for this information is a guy named Steven Harris. His website is www.solar1234.com, but he is in no way limited to solar. He has done a massive amount of scientific testing on wood gasifiers, methane production, alcohol production, engine conversion, solar, you name it and he has studied it from a scientific standpoint and presents the information very clearly. In fact, the last 2 episodes of my favorite podcast, www.thesurvivalpodcast.com (Episodes 939 and 940) are his 9th interview with Steven. I HIGHLY recommend you listen to them and take notes on what will fit in your lifestyle and mechanical ability and interest and start making yourself energy resilient.
