Mongolian Traditions

Dan Carlin in his most 2 recent Hardcore History podcasts has been describing the Mongol invasion of China under Ghengis Khan. A truly bloody and horrific period of history, his insights into the culture of the Mongol’s of the period, as revelaed in period writings, are truly awe-inspiring and shocking.

Here in Kabul, our airfield security is provided by a small force of Mongolian soldiers. They dont speak English, but they are very effective guards. A few weeks ago they put on a martial arts demonstration that involved a lot of indifference to pain as they broke glass and boards with various parts of their bodies. They live in a small compound near the airfield and painted the image above on one of the concrete blast barriers around their living area. Clearly, they have not forgotten their heritage.
